The one rule

Every item lost to a scam was handed over outside a completed, visible, in-game trade. If both items are in the trade window and both sides confirm at the same time, there is no scam to run. Everything below is a variation on getting you to break that single rule.

Send first

The scammer claims the trade window cannot hold their side, or that they need to “check” your item, and asks you to send yours first. There is never a legitimate reason for this. Decline and move on.

The fake middleman

A third person appears, described as a trusted middleman, and offers to hold both items. If you did not choose that person yourself from a community you already trust, they are part of the scam.

Phishing “value” sites

A link is shared that looks like a values or inventory checker and asks you to log in with your game account. No values site needs your login. Ours does not, and none of the legitimate ones do either.

Fake giveaways and impersonation

Accounts copy the name and picture of a known trader or site and announce a giveaway that requires a small item “to qualify”. Check the account against the real one before responding to anything.

If you were scammed

Report the account in game immediately, keep your screenshots, and post the pattern publicly so other traders recognise it. Do not attempt to trade with the same person to “get it back” — that is the second half of the same scam.
